Recruiting NEH Faculty Fellows

The “Cultivating the Environmental Humanities” program supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is seeking applications for its first cohort of Faculty Fellows for the 2017-2018 academic year.

“Cultivating the Environmental Humanities” aims to establish stronger institutional and scholarly links between STEM fields and the Humanities at Rowan around the study of environmental issues. The grant will be used to develop courses and a CUGS in Environmental Humanities, as well as Humanities modules that can be incorporated into classes on environmental subjects. It will also sponsor a Colloquium Series featuring speakers in Humanities and STEM fields, and a Faculty Group to discuss and develop both research scholarship and pedagogical approaches towards teaching about the environment.

Expressions of interest should explain your reasons for participating, and in particular, ways in which you would incorporate humanistic content into a specific course that you regularly teach. Examples might include dealing in some way with history, morality and ethics, questions of value and priority, the metaphors that we use to talk about environmental issues, and so on. In short, how might a Humanities component help to provide a context for understanding the social and/or political world in which the environmental issues addressed by your class take place? Fellows will collaborate to develop and pilot an environmental humanities module in their courses. In addition, Fellows would be expected to participate in the Faculty Group and act as speakers or panelists in the Colloquium series, helping to articulate connections between scholarship on environmental issues in STEM and Humanities fields.

Fellows will each receive a $1,000 stipend for their participation. Applications are open to tenure-track and non-tenure track faculty at any rank. A small number of meetings are anticipated each semester.

Please submit expressions of interest and a CV by June 1, 2017 to program directors, Jordan Howell (Geography, Planning, & Sustainability, howellj@rowan.edu) and Dustin Crowley (English, crowleyd@rowan.edu). Decisions will be announced by August 1, 2017.
